Broughton House & Garden
An 18th-century town house on the High Street, home of painter E.A. Hornel from 1901 until his death in 1933. A leading member of the Glasgow Boys, Hornel extended the house to include a gallery and studio, and created a remarkable Japanese-inspired garden descending to the River Dee. Now a National Trust for Scotland property, the house preserves Hornel's art collection, his personal library of rare Burns and Galloway books, and his studio arranged as he left it. The garden is one of the hidden treasures of south-west Scotland.
