S.J. Peploe
artist
Kirkcudbright, United Kingdom
About
Samuel John Peploe (1871-1935), one of the four Scottish Colourists, was a regular visitor to Kirkcudbright from 1918 through his friendship with E.A. Taylor and Jessie M. King. Although primarily associated with Edinburgh and the French Riviera, Peploe's Kirkcudbright connections link the colony to the broader movement of Scottish modernism. His bold use of colour and simplified forms brought a continental sensibility to the Galloway art scene.
Artistic Style: Scottish Colourist, Post-Impressionism, Fauvism-influenced
Mediums
oil painting
Artistic Philosophy
Peploe's pursuit of pure colour and form, influenced by Cezanne and Matisse, brought European modernism to Scotland's artistic consciousness.
