About
Emil Nolde (1867–1956), born Emil Hansen near the Danish-German border, was one of the most powerful Expressionist painters of the 20th century. His paintings are explosions of colour — vivid sunflowers, stormy seascapes, and religious scenes rendered in thick, aggressive brushwork. Though briefly associated with Die Brücke, Nolde largely worked alone, developing a deeply personal style rooted in the flat marshlands and dramatic skies of northern Germany.
