About
Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840) was the greatest painter of the German Romantic movement and one of the most important landscape painters in Western art. Born in Greifswald on the Baltic coast, his paintings of misty mountains, Gothic ruins, moonlit seas, and solitary figures contemplating vast landscapes became defining images of Romanticism. His masterwork "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog" remains one of the most iconic paintings in art history.
