Museum Barberini: Potsdam's Impressionist Jewel

When the Museum Barberini opened in January 2017, it immediately redrew the cultural map of the Berlin-Brandenburg region. Built inside a meticulous reconstruction of the 18th-century Barberini Palace on Potsdam's Alter Markt, the museum houses the Hasso Plattner Collection — arguably the most important private collection of Impressionist painting assembled in the 21st century.

The Plattner Collection

SAP co-founder Hasso Plattner spent decades assembling a collection that spans the full arc of Impressionism and its successors. The holdings are particularly strong in Claude Monet, with canvases that trace the artist's evolution from early plein-air studies to the late Water Lilies. Works by Renoir, Signac, Sisley, and Morisot fill out a collection that would be the envy of any national museum.

The collection extends beyond French Impressionism to include important works by Max Liebermann and other German practitioners who translated the movement's principles into a Central European context. This breadth gives the museum a perspective that purely French-focused collections lack.

The Architecture

The museum building is itself a statement. The original Barberini Palace, modelled on the Palazzo Barberini in Rome, was destroyed in 1945. Its reconstruction — with a faithful exterior concealing thoroughly modern gallery spaces — mirrors the broader rebuilding of Potsdam's historic centre. The result is exhibition spaces that combine classical proportions with contemporary lighting and climate control.

Beyond the Permanent Collection

Museum Barberini has established an ambitious programme of temporary exhibitions that extend well beyond Impressionism. Recent shows have addressed American art, German Romanticism, and photography, drawing from major international collections and positioning the museum as a serious exhibition venue rather than simply a display case for one collector's holdings.

For visitors from Berlin, Potsdam is just 25 minutes by S-Bahn, making the Museum Barberini an easy day trip that can be combined with the city's UNESCO-listed palaces and gardens. It has quickly become one of the essential art destinations in the Berlin region.
